The joke of 2009--Sachin at 26th position in ICC rankings

Saturday, January 17, 2009

The ICC ranking was eagerly awaited by the international cricket fraternity and the verdict is out at last; the new ranking assigns Sachin Tendulkar the twenty sixth place in the list of best batsmen that cricket has ever produced. No, it is not a printing error, you got it right; according to ICC ranking, two maestros in international cricket - Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara are not among the top twenty Test players. This unique ranking not only stunned the followers of cricket worldwide, it has been considered as a big joke by some of the prominent cricket personalities of the country.
When even Sir Don Bradman picked up Sachin as his torch bearer, then ICC’s decision to keep him out of top ten all-time-great list does not only look odd, it looks funny and it raises question about the logical basis of such estimation. The ex-skipper of India and the Vengsarkar voices his doubts about the authenticity of the method that ICC follows in doling out their ranks for the international cricket players. Chetan Chauhan, one time opener for India also voiced his shock and disagreement, “Anybody who scores 12,000 runs…and not having his name in the all-time great list will surprise not only me but everyone in the fraternity.”
So what has been ICC’s yardstick for preparing this controversial list? Consistency in career and the highest performances in the career of a cricketer have been two major criteria in ICC’s method of ranking. If consistency was a big factor for the selection, how can one down- rate Sachin who has over 12000 runs in test cricket and has a track record that spans over seventeen long years! And so far as the high points in the career of a test cricketer is concerned, Cricket360.com has big doubts whether ICC could differentiate between Sachin’s top performances and ordinary performances. Seems that ICC could not quite figure out the high points of the career of this player, who for the most part of his Test career stayed at the summit.
While ICC’s injustice to Sachin drew huge nationwide criticisms, The Indian cricket board decided to distance itself entirely from this cricket controversy. It maintained that since it is an ICC decision, the BCCI should not make any interference.
It does not matter, whether BCCI officially voices its displeasure over the issue, the rest of the nation seems to fully agree with Chetan Chauhan that “If Sir Don Bradman is number one, and then Sachin should have been number two.”

Sacked Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson is seeking legal advice over a pay dispute, sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Sunday. PCB director genaral Altaf said that Lawson returned the cheque given to him as he was unhappy with the $$$ paid.

Lawson was due three months' pay as compensation for the early termination of his contract and Altaf said this obligation had been met.Lawson's contract was terminated by the Pakistan board on Friday with nine months remaining of his two-year contract.

Sources in the board told that Lawson had told the PCB that he was in touch with the Australian high commission for legal advice and that he would not leave Pakistan until the matter was settled.

The PCB has appointed former test player Intikhab Alam as coach for next month's one-day series against West Indies in Abu Dhabi and also offered him a two-year contract that has to first be ratified by the governing body

West Indies' Mr. Dependable Shivnarine Chanderpaul was adjudged Cricketer of the Year after a fine performance in Tests as well limited over cricket while South African fast bowler Dale Steyn earned the Test Cricketer of the Year Award.

Dhoni back at no.1 in ICC rankings

Saturday, August 30, 2008

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni toppled his South African counterpart Graeme Smith to regain the top spot in the latest ICC ranking for ODI batsmen.

By virtue of his consistent performance, including 76 and 71 in the previous two one-dayers of the on-going ODI series against Sri Lanka, Dhoni has 803 rating points in his kitty, 27 points higher than Smith who occupies the second spot.

Dhoni had previously occupied the number one position for a brief period in 2006.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting is in the third spot with 751 points followed by team-mate Michael Hussey and England skipper Kevin Pietersen.

Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is placed the ninth while an out of form Yuvraj Singh is languishing at 18th.

Meanwhile, comeback man Zaheer Khan is the lone Indian bowler in the top 20 ODI bowlers chart in the 14th spot with 642 rating points.

Australia's Nathan Bracken leads the table, followed by Kiwi skipper Daniel Vettori, team-mate Shane Bond, England youngster Stuart Broad and Sri Lanka spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan.

However, no Indian representation is there in the all-rounders chart which is being led by Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik. England's Andrew Flintoff and Kiwi Jacob Oram find themselves in the second and third position respectively.

Although India has already pocketed the five-match ODI series against the Links with one match to go, but it didn't help Twenty20 World Champions to move up the ODI championship table as they find themselves in the fourth spot.

Australia continued to lead the pack, followed by South Africa and New Zealand

SA may host Champions trophy

Sunday, June 29, 2008

The International Cricket Council has put South Africa on standby as a possible Champions Trophy venue, but insists that Pakistan remains its first choice as hosts, an ICC source said on Friday.

The year's biggest one-day tournament featuring the top eight Test nations - Australia, South Africa, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the West Indies - is due to be held in Pakistan from September 11-28.

But touring Pakistan has been a security concern for several foreign teams, especially Australia which postponed its March-April visit this year after a series of suicide bomb blasts.

With Sri Lanka, the alternate venue, in the midst of heavy fighting between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels, the ICC has included South Africa as possible hosts.

"South Africa could hold the Champions Trophy in case Pakistan or Sri Lanka can't," the ICC source said.

"But it must be stressed that Pakistan remains our first choice and a lot of work has already been done to ensure the tournament is held there."

'I think Pakistan is a safe place'

Former South African all-rounder Mike Procter said on Friday he saw no reason why Pakistan cannot host the Champions Trophy in September, describing security measures as "fantastic".

Procter, who is here as an International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee for the ongoing Asia Cup, made the comments after players from Australia, New Zealand and England raised concerns.

"I see no reason why Pakistan should not host the Champions Trophy. I found Pakistan a safe place and have been here twice this year," Procter, who is overseeing Asia Cup Group A matches, said.

"This is my personal opinion and I don't know that the Australians have to say... (but) I was here in March and I am here in June and I found security arrangements to be fantastic," said Procter.

"The foreign umpires who have been with me during the Asia Cup also felt very safe and I would love to come to Pakistan for the future events whenever I get appointments."

ICC board meetings start on June 29 in Dubai, where an independent security report on the situation in Pakistan will be discussed before a final decision on the Champions Trophy is taken.
